History

Soon after foundation of the Institute of Geology as a Croatian Geological Survey in 1909 a need for publication of its own geological journal was recognized - Vijesti geoloskog povjerenstva (Geological Survey News), which was only published in 6 volumes from 1911 to 1916, edited by Dragutin Gorjanovic-Kramberger.
Vijesti geoloskog zavoda (Geological Department News) was published in 3 volumes from 1925 to 1929, edited by Ferdo Koch.
Vjestnik Hrvatskog drzavnog geolozkog zavoda i Hrvatskog drzavnog geoloskog muzeja (Newsletter of the Croatian State Geological Institute and Croatian State Geological Museum) was published in 3 volumes from 1942 to 1944, edited by Fran Suklje.

The direct forerunner of Geologia Croatica, Geoloski vjesnik (Geological Newsletter) was published more or less in Croatian, continuously from 1947 to 1991 in 44 volumes. Until 1953 it was a journal of the Institute of Geology, then it became a journal of the Institute of Geology and the Croatian Geological Society published by the Institute of Geology (today Croatian Geological Survey). Volume 1 (1947) was edited by Antun Taksic, volumes 2-12 (1948-1958) by an anonymous editorial board (the responsible editor was Josip Ogulinac), volumes 13-26 (1959-1973) by Vanda Kochansky-Devidé, volumes 27-33 (1974-1980) by Ivan Gusic, volumes 34-43 (1981-1990) by Branko Crnkovic, and Vol. 44 (1991) by Ivo Velic.

In 1991, the Publisher and Editorial Board of the journal changed its name to Geologia Croatica. However, the new journal represented a direct successor to Geoloski vjesnik, and therefore the first volume was designated as Geologia Croatica, Vol. 45. Change in the editorial policies was not only cosmetic: from Vol. 46 the journal has been published twice a year (Geoloski vjesnik was an annual publication), all papers are written in English, the international review of every paper is obligatory, and the Editorial Board has been established. From the first volume of Geologia Croatica (45, 1992) Ivo Velic has been the Editor-in-Chief, and Igor Vlahovic, the Managing Editor from vol. 46 (1993), joined him as Editor-in-Chief in 2002. From 2008 (vol. 61) new editors are Mladen Juracic and Ivo Velic.

Today the journal is listed in 10 bibliographic databases and distributed regularly to 300 subscribers throughout the international scientific community, and more than 200 subscribers in Croatia (mostly to the members of the Croatian Geological Society, but also to numerous institutions). The number of foreign contributions is continuously growing, as well as the international scientific interest in our publication. This is one of the main motives to launch an electronic version of the journal in 2001.

Geologia Croatica is a scientific journal of the Croatian Geological Survey and the Croatian Geological Society, dealing with all aspects of Earth sciences, especially regarding the Dinarides, the Adriatic/Mediterranean region, Pannonian Basin, and/or karst issues. It is published three times per year in English, and is widely distributed throughout the international scientific community
