Abstract

The U-Pb age spectrum of zircon grains including rim and xenocrystic core domains from an Early Cambrian peraluminous  (meta)granitoid in the eastern part of Mt. Papuk (Croatia) was determined using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass  spectrometry. Zircon cathodoluminescence images reveal an unusually high proportion of xenocrystic cores surrounded by  oscillatory-zoned magmatic rims. The U-Pb age spectrum displays a prominent cluster at ca. 535 Ma (Ediacaran–Cambrian),  interpreted as the crystallisation age, and a skewed one towards ca. 498 Ma (Cambrian–Ordovician), interpreted as a Cenerian  thermal event superimposed on the Cadomian granitoid crystallisation age. Xenocrystic zircon cores yield several age groups and  single ages within a Pan-African cluster at ≈ 0.65–0.8 Ga, along with clusters from detrital sources between 0.8 and 3.0 Ga. The age  spectrum, analysed by the frequency ratio of Proterozoic to Archean zircon ages, the shape of a kernel density estimate curve, and a multidimensional scaling plot, indicates a provenance of zircon grains that is typical for the western part of northern Gondwana,  particularly the Saharan Metacraton, with contributions from the Arabian–Nubian shield and the West African craton, where transport  to the distant northern Gondwana margin occurred from their hinterland.  The granitoid crystallisation age of 535.3 ± 0.9 ǀ 7.1 Ma (age ± 2SE uncertainty ǀtotal 2SE including systematic uncertainties) represents the “oldest dated rock” in Croatia, while among the xenocrystic zircon cores, the oldest zircon in Croatia measured so far has a 207Pb/206Pb date of 3061±27 Ma (Mesoarchean).
